NICKEL PLATING

Electroless nickel is commonly used in the automotive, aircraft, plastic molding, marine, electronics, chemical, petroleum, food processing and glass making industries for its corrosion, wear and lubricity properties.

PROCESSING - ELECTROLESS NICKEL

Electroless nickel plating involves the deposition of a thin layer of nickel without the use of electricity. Other plating processes such as chrome, copper or cadmium, require electricity to attract the plating material to the substrate. This results in uneven plating thickness, which may require post plating correction. With electroless nickel, the plating is deposited evenly on all surfaces including grooves, outside corners, and blind holes. No post plating grinding or clean up is necessary.

The coating is actually nickel with about 10% phosphorus by weight. The material is highly corrosion resistant and very lubrous. The corrosion resistance of electroless nickel can exceed 300 series stainless steel. As plated the hardness of the coating is about Rc 50, but a low temperature post plating treatment can increase the hardness to Rc 68.

PROCESSING - ELECTROLESS NICKEL TEFLON ®

By adding a fine dispersion of Teflon® particles to the plating solution, an extremely lubrous coating is produced. This coating has proven immensely effective in the plastic molding, textile and packaging industries for its anti stick properties.

At Fused Metals Inc. the plating process is quality driven for effectiveness and repeatability. Each shipment is accompanied by a written process certification to provide traceability. Plating procedures conform to MIL, DOD, and AMS specifications.
